Hours of explosions can be heard in Kiev as the capital repels waves of Russian attack drones

On September 30, city authorities announced that Kiev had become the target of several waves of Russian attack drones.

Emergency sirens sounded in the capital just after 1 a.m., and full consent was announced only just after 6 a.m.

As air defenses clashed with drones, Kiev Independent correspondents heard multiple explosions, anti-aircraft fire and the sounds of unmanned aerial vehicles flying overhead in at least one district of the city.

Shortly before 5 a.m., Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said several drones had flown “over the capital” and added: “Stay in your shelters!”

No damage or casualties have been reported so far, although Klitschko said the wreckage of one drone was found near a residential building in Kyiv’s Obolon district.

“All Russian attack drones that threatened Kiev have been neutralized,” the head of the Kyiv Municipal Military Administration, Serhiy Popko, announced in a Telegram post, adding that several waves attacked the city from different directions.

The Ukrainian Air Force later said that overnight, Russian forces launched 73 Shahed-class drones against cities across Ukraine, of which 67 were intercepted.

It was not stated how many people attacked Kyiv.

Russian drone attacks on Kiev have intensified in recent weeks – on the night of September 26, over 15 drones were spotted near the capital, of which about 10 were shot down by air defense, the Kyiv City Military Administration reported.
