Mikel Arteta said Arsenal would keep their feet on the ground after taking advantage of Manchester City’s draw with Newcastle United and dramatic victory over Leicester City on Saturday.

The Cityzens were without Rodri and Kevin De Bruyne at St James’ Park as the Magpies drew 1-1.

Arsenal looked to be close to three points after a 2-0 win at Leicester, but needed a couple of stoppage-time goals in the second half to secure a 4-2 win and move level on points with City and one behind Liverpool.

In recent years, the Premier League title has been decided by narrow margins, and last season the Gunners missed out by two points, making their latest victory important in closing the gap at the top.

Arteta, however, insisted it was too early to dwell too much on the significance of victory when City slip.

Asked if it was a sweeter victory after City dropped points, Arteta replied: “It’s the sixth game in the Premier League. It’s September. We want to win every match and we will do everything we can to achieve that. That’s all Let’s go match by match and try to improve every week.

“We talk about it (tension) in September, regardless of what we do in September. Of course we want to win and start building a proper platform for the season and competing in every competition in the places and areas we want. To do that, you have to keep winning, winning, winning, that’s the requirement. You see the level of other teams in the league, but we can only control what we do.

Arsenal host Southampton in their next Premier League match, but first welcome Paris Saint-Germain to the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday for their second Champions League match of the campaign.
