Gunshots on Birmingham’s West Side leave man dead in the middle of the street

Gunfire broke out Saturday evening in a west Birmingham neighborhood, leaving one dead in the middle of the street.

Shot Spotter, the city’s gunshot detection system, alerted West Precinct officers around 9:30 p.m. to shots fired in the 1400 block of First Avenue West.

One of the Shot Spotter calls recorded five shots, the second 12, said Sgt. Wade left.

The victim collapsed on the road, surrounded by shell casings. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Wade said the preliminary investigation indicates the victim was involved in a verbal altercation elsewhere.

“At this time,” she said, “it is unclear how the altercation ended at this location,” she said.

Wade said it was not immediately known if the victim fought back.

No arrests have been made.

Wade said there were witnesses at both locations who were able to tell police about the altercation.

This deadly shooting constitutes the 127th homicide committed in the city since the start of the year. Of these cases, eight were deemed justifiable and two others occurred in previous years, but the victims died in 2024.

Across Jefferson County, there were 162 homicides in 2024, including 127 in Birmingham.

It’s been a deadly week and month in the city.

A week ago, a mass shooting in Five Points South left four people dead and 17 others injured. There have been five additional homicides since this mass shooting.

“I would say it’s heartbreaking for everyone involved, the family, the city, the police officers,” Wade said of the continued violence. “But we’re going to do everything we can in every homicide case. It’s no different from the others.
