Ohio officials urge witnesses to come forward with information after shooting leaves one dead and 24 injured

Ohio’s police chief urged witnesses to come forward after one person was killed and 24 were injured in a mass shooting shortly after midnight Sunday.

Officials said the shots were fired early Sunday morning, just after midnight, in the city of Akron, where multiple victims were reported to have been killed. Shortly thereafter, local hospitals notified emergency dispatchers that people were arriving at emergency departments with gunshot wounds.

Capt. Michael Miller, public information officer for the Akron Police Department, said Sunday morning that a total of 25 people had died.

Miller said some of the victims were in critical condition, while others suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

According to Police Chief Brian Harding, the victims included a 27-year-old man. The identity of this person has not yet been revealed.

Cleveland Clinic told News 5 it admitted seven patients to the hospital Sunday morning, one of whom is in critical condition. From just after midnight until about 3:30 a.m., the hospital was on strict lockdown.

“This was a tragic incident that impacts our entire community,” said Mayor Shammas Malik. “The sheer number of victims is shocking and disturbing. “I want to be clear: anyone involved in last night’s shooting will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”

Three agencies offered rewards totaling $22,500 for information leading to the suspect’s arrest: $5,000 from Summit County Crime Stoppers, $7,500 from the U.S. Marshals Service and up to $10,000 from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives , Akron officials said.

“We must hold people accountable when they commit violence. This is the only way we can keep our communities safe,” Malik said.

Harding said investigators found two guns and more than 35 shell casings at the outdoor party where the shooting occurred.

Meanwhile, Summa Health informed the facility that 15 patients were admitted to its hospital this morning. 13 of those victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries and several have since been released. According to the hospital, one person is in critical condition.
